“It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves.” - William Shakespeare

What to do at times we all feel like giving up on everything that surrounds us?

When we are drowning in the dark , feeling adrift and overwhelmed with the void inside us telling us to abandon hope. But here's what to recall at times of those setbacks in our life. What feels like a struggle today will feel like a reward soon enough. So, even though today is hard, if you are doing the right things, the day after tomorrow will be full of sunshine.

Any goal really worth setting is likely going to encounter some obstacles, but this doesn’t mean the end is not worth pursuing. It simply means you have to rethink the way you’re going about reaching your goal, and then try again.

Try until you get wherever it is you want to go.

Here are things to do when you feel like you want to give up.

Give yourself a reason why you should keep it going

"It’s always seems impossible until it’s done." - Nelson Mandela.

One of the most important steps in setting a goal is to create a list of all the reasons why you want to achieve that goal. In fact, if you discover that you don’t have a strong enough why” for a particular goal, it’s probably a good idea to discard it. After all, your “why’s” are what will motivate you to continue striving for a goal, even when the going gets tough.

When you feel like quitting, look at your list containing all of the reasons why your goal is so important to you. If need be, add even more reasons why. The greater the quantity of reasons — and the stronger the reasons—that you have to keep going, the more likely it is that you won’t quit.

Have you seen those before and after photos of someone who’s worked out for a year? The contrast between the two photos is stark. The person in the photo, however, usually doesn’t realise how much they’ve changed until they see the comparison themselves.

This analogy applies to any goal or path you’ve been diligently working on.

Maybe you’ve hit a plateau or endured some setbacks. The obstacles can become so frustrating that you figure its time to give up on your dream. Before you abandon your mission, take some time to think about how far you’ve come already.

Look at how things were when you started and how they are now. Sure, you may have fallen flat a few times, but you’ve definitely made a great deal of progress as well. Realise the amount of strength it took you to get started in the first place and try to cultivate it again to push you towards the finish line.

Create a proper plan to reach your goals

In order to hit a target, you’ve got to have a target.

If you are not big on goal setting, I can completely relate, but it’s a critical step for a couple of reasons. First, setting goals will help you visualise where you want to be and second, if you don’t set goals, how will you know when you get there?

The only way for you to get what you want out of life is to set goals. Put your plan down on paper, making smaller goals if needed. Look at the big picture first and then think about the action tasks you need to do to be able to work towards that goal.

Keep pushing yourself

"You must do the thing you think you cannot do".

If you believe that you can do it, then you are worthy of it!

More than just being aware of and celebrating goals, check in with yourself. Are you enjoying your routine? Are the times working for you? Try something new sometimes. If you’re feeling motivated, great! If not, question why or talk to a friend in your support team who may be able to offer some suggestions to switch things up.

Regular Reviews

Regular reflection and review is another good way to make sure that you’re on the right track to your goals. Scheduling some time at the end of the week or at the end of the day to look at the things you’ve accomplished can have a positive impact on this.

You’ll feel great about being able to finish the things you did, and for the things you weren’t able to finish, you can think about why you weren’t able to, and find solutions so that it won’t happen next time.

Reflecting and reviewing how you spent your time will also keep you accountable for your actions.

The more you keep track, the better you’ll know yourself and your habits.

You’ll be able to know when you’re most productive, when you need a break and you’ll be able to efficiently schedule tasks for next time

Celebrate your small victories and Reward yourself

Break it down into tiny steps and reward yourself for every step taken.

Reward yourself along the way. Choose something you enjoy!!! I do like a good party. Small celebrations will prevent me from quitting. Even if I have a particularly rough setback, I will find a reason to celebrate.

Keeping your head in the game is the cause for celebration and you must not allow yourself to get into a negative funk.

Start slow

It doesn’t matter how slowly you grow as long as you don’t stop — Confucius.

It's a slow process, but quitting won’t speed it up!

At any point along the journey, that’s the magic question.

Giving up is a choice – It’s the easiest thing in the world to do. We all have a choice. We either move forward and make the changes that will get us to where we want to be or give up.

In the end, when it comes to whether or not you can do it, the key to success is in taking a moment to slow down and appreciate the small things that pushes us towards our goals.

Make Quitting Not an Option and make it a routine

“Fall down seven times. Get up eight”.

Just decide that you’re not going to give up. When you give up, you end any hope of achieving what you want to achieve. Struggle actually builds character. It’s there to serve you.

Keep Reminding yourself that when you concentrate your energy on your chosen goals with dogged determination, you transform them into reality.

Decide that quitting is not an option and, no matter how many times you fail, it won’t be an option.

Do whatever it takes to remind yourself that you will not give up on the things you want no matter what happens. Find ways to stay motivated and inspired, and keep pushing.

Yes, you might find motivation using all the steps above. But, how long do you want that motivation to last? Working out for 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month is not long enough..

Find what works for you on the regular basis and make it A LIFESTYLE!
